The application of marine geophysics and GIS techniques to the characterization of benthic habitats has increased the ability of fisheries managers to assess distribution and habitat types beyond common practices. We report upon a 150 kHz sidescan sonar survey offshore of Kruzof Island, Alaska undertaken to characterize rockfish (Sebastes) habitat. Using GIS, MapGrafix and Map*Factory we determined the percentage of seafloor cover that exists in our survey area. Bathymetry in the study area was determined with sidescan interferometry. All XYZ data were gridded using Surfer and plotted in shaded relief, bathymetric contour, and 3-dimensional formats. Contoured bathymetry was used as an overlay in MapGrafix. Small sub-areas were extracted from the... |

Abstract The epsilon toxin, produced by Clostridium perfringens, is responsible for enterotoxemia in ruminants and is a potential bioterrorism agent. In the present study, 15 regions of the toxin were recognized by antibodies present in the serum, with different immunodominance scales, and may be antigen determinants that can be used to formulate subunit vaccines. |

A monthly, isopycnal/mixed-layer ocean climatology (MIMOC), global from 0 to 1950dbar, is compared with other monthly ocean climatologies. All available quality-controlled profiles of temperature (T) and salinity (S) versus pressure (P) collected by conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) instruments from the Argo Program, Ice-Tethered Profilers, and archived in the World Ocean Database are used. MIMOC provides maps of mixed layer properties (conservative temperature, , absolute salinity, SA, and maximum P) as well as maps of interior ocean properties (, SA, and P) to 1950dbar on isopycnal surfaces. A third product merges the two onto a pressure grid spanning the upper 1950dbar, adding more familiar potential temperature () and practical salinity (S) maps.... |

ABSTRACT The state of Tocantins is inserted in the new Brazilian agricultural frontier and has shown enormous potential for expansion of the agricultural lands. However, there is a lack of more elaborate scientific information for better planning and guide agricultural activities, especially regarding the soil and water conservation. Tocantins has a relevant rainfall spatial variability and, consequently, rainfall erosivity. Thus, this work aimed to develop models to estimate the mean monthly and annual rainfall and means rainfall erosivity factor (R-factor) of the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) for the state of Tocantins. For that, 97 historical series of daily rainfall were studied, considering a standard period of 25 years (1985-2009). The fitting... |

The present work aim to develop a methodology, using digital images processing with morphometric data to subsidize the soil mapping, in order to guide the field work becoming survey faster, better precision and cheaper. Initially the Digital Elevation Model was made (DEM), for TOPOGRID method of the ArcInfo program, using 37 topographical letters in scale 1:10.000 the Jardim river basin. From the DEM the morphometric maps of the basin had been generated (slope, flow direction and contribution area), used to elaborate the color compositions and histograms analyses in order to allow the definition of soil pattern. After that was made the comparison with the soil map elaborated by Embrapa where could be conserved great similarity of the soil units. |

Many applications of Visual SLAM, such as augmented reality, virtual reality, robotics or autonomous driving, require versatile, robust and precise solutions, most often with real-time capability. In this work, we describe OV 2 SLAM, a fully online algorithm, handling both monocular and stereo camera setups, various map scales and frame-rates ranging from a few Hertz up to several hundreds. It combines numerous recent contributions in visual localization within an efficient multi-threaded architecture. Extensive comparisons with competing algorithms shows the state-of-the-art accuracy and real-time performance of the resulting algorithm. For the benefit of the community, we release the source code: https://github.com/ov2slam/ov2slam . |

The aim of this study is to model the seaweed species distribution with respect to environmental parameters. We focused on fixed species of algae, such as fucoids. Firstly, we identified environmental parameters, such as substratum nature, immersion time, exposure, etc., which determine the seaweed distribution. Secondly, we used field sampling to compute the distribution laws for seaweed according to the environmental parameters selected. Thirdly, we used the distribution laws and the environmental parameters to perform predictive mapping of seaweed belts with a fuzzy logic method. Seaweed presence is directly dependent on the nature of the substratum. In the intertidal domain we used an alternative, because seaweed beds can be observed directly. We... |

ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to characterize the spatial and temporal (2000-2015) rainfall pattern variability and erosive potential in the different physiographic regions of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Rainfall data series (3 to 12 years) from 25 weather stations of the state were analyzed. Erosive rainfall events (more than 10 mm depth) were considered to evaluate the annual erosivity index, monthly erosivity index (EI30), rainfall erosivity factor (R), and rainfall pattern. The inverse distance weighting (IDW) - inverse of the square of the distance - was used to create spatial interpolation and develop maps. The rainfall data from the weather stations showed average annual rainfall of 827 mm and average erosivity of 4,784 MJ mm... |

Multibeam echosounders are becoming widespread for the purposes of seafloor bathymetry mapping, but the acquisition and the use of seafloor backscatter measurements, acquired simultaneously with the bathymetric data, are still insufficiently understood, controlled and standardized. This presents an obstacle to well-accepted, standardized analysis and application by end users. The Marine Geological and Biological Habitat Mapping group (Geohab.org) has long recognized the need for better coherence and common agreement on acquisition, processing and interpretation of seafloor backscatter data, and established the Backscatter Working Group (BSWG) in May 2013. This paper presents an overview of this initiative, the mandate, structure and program of the working... |
